Berkshire Hathaway has placed a $10 billion private investment in Alphabet, one of the largest single technology bets the conglomerate has ever made, structured as $5 billion in Class A stock at $351.81 per share and $5 billion in Class C stock at $348.20 per share.
The placement adds to a position Berkshire has been building since the third quarter of 2025, and it lands at a notable moment: talent departures at Alphabet wiped roughly $269 billion off the company’s market capitalization during the week of June 18–24, and the entry price sits at a meaningful discount to Alphabet’s February 2026 highs. Berkshire has a long-documented pattern of stepping into technology names during sentiment-driven dislocations rather than fundamentals-driven ones, and this purchase fits that mold.
The case Berkshire is underwriting
The numbers behind the bet are substantial. Alphabet generates approximately $174 billion in trailing-twelve-month operating cash flow, carries a $460 billion contracted cloud backlog, and reaches roughly 2 billion consumers monthly through Gemini-powered products. Its infrastructure footprint includes more than 10 million kilometers of terrestrial and subsea fiber connecting upwards of 30 data centers across 40 cloud regions — the kind of physical moat that is increasingly what separates AI infrastructure leaders from fast followers.
Demand still outstripping supply
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai told investors at the company’s June 2 presentation that enterprise and consumer demand for its AI products currently exceeds available compute capacity, even as hardware and engineering improvements since the Gemini 3 launch have cut the cost of core AI responses by more than 30 percent. The company has guided to $180–190 billion in 2026 capital expenditure, with Pichai signaling a significant further increase in 2027 — a spending trajectory Berkshire’s investment effectively endorses.
Why it matters beyond Alphabet
The placement also lands one trading day after Alphabet’s debut as a Dow Jones Industrial Average component, replacing Verizon, and the same week Apple confirmed its next-generation Siri will run on Apple Foundation Models built in partnership with Google’s Gemini family. Taken together, the signals point toward the same conclusion: distribution surfaces and balance-sheet-scale compute investment are becoming the dominant axis of competition in AI, ahead of raw model benchmarks — a dynamic that should reframe how corporate boards think about AI vendor concentration risk heading into 2027 budget cycles.
